Conference Theme

Globalization vs. Localization: International Experience and Chinese Practice in a New Era

In the last thirty years, China has achieved many miracles in economic growth and urban development. China’s rapid urbanization has been accompanied by and resulted in a series of problems, such as urban illnesses, aging population, ecological deterioration, cultural heritage destruction, rural blight, widening urban-rural gaps, and regional disparities.

China’s economy is entering a new normal of relatively slower growth. It’s urbanization mode is shifting from large-scale inefficient expansion in urban fringe areas to intensive redevelopment in built-up areas. To this end, the Chinese government has proposed a series of strategies to meet the challenges, including new rural construction, integrated urban and rural planning, new urbanization, beautifying countryside, integrated corridors, sponge city, urban regeneration, urban design and so on.

On a global scale, new technologies, such as mobile internet, big data, artificial intelligence, and new energy are profoundly changing the world’s socioeconomic structure and inevitably urban and rural spaces. Planners in China and abroad have begun to explore data-driven urban management, smart cities, low-carbon cities, and other development and planning strategies.

Therefore, exploring the urban-rural development path in the context of new normal and new globalization has become an urgent task for planning researchers and practitioners in China. This conference invites scholars, planners and government officials in China and abroad to share their innovative ideas and successful experiences under different contexts and to explore coping strategies and development approaches for urban and rural planning in China.
